Sapporo Bīru Hakubutsukan
Sapporo Beer Museum
Japan's oldest beer was born here in 1876, and the original Kaitakushi Pilsner recipe can only be tasted inside these ivy-draped brick walls.
Housed in the original 1876 brewery — a gorgeous ivy-covered red brick building — the Sapporo Beer Museum traces the history of Japan's oldest beer brand with surprisingly engaging English-language exhibits. You'll learn about the pioneering German-trained brewers who launched the operation during the Meiji era, then head to the tasting salon to compare the signature Black Label with Sapporo Classic, found only in Hokkaido, and Kaitakushi Pilsner, a recreation of the original recipe available nowhere else. The brick architecture alone is worth the visit, and the attached Sapporo Biergarten complex makes for an easy evening extension.
