This vast temple complex a short walk from Kyoto Station contains some of the finest examples of Azuchi-Momoyama architecture in existence. The Goei-do Main Hall is staggering in its scale, while the Daisho-in hall dazzles with sumptuous paintings, intricate carvings, and metalwork that catches the light with every subtle turn. The ornamental Kara-mon gate is so elaborately carved it's said you could stare at it all day and discover new details. Unlike Kyoto's hillside temples, Nishi Hongwanji sits in the flatlands and feels like a living place of worship rather than a tourist attraction.
