Housed inside a 145-year-old machiya — a traditional Japanese merchant house — Le Labo's Kyoto branch captures exactly what this city does best: old and new in the same breath. The American fragrance brand serves a respectable latte and a very good chocolate cookie, but the real star here is the architecture. Dark beams, whitewashed earth walls, tatami corners that used to be family rooms, now smelling faintly of Santal 33.
