A golden dome rebuilt from rubble — the synagogue the GDR demolished and a unified Germany chose to resurrect.

The Scheunenviertel synagogue inaugurated in 1866 as Germany's largest Jewish house of worship, with its distinctive Moorish-Byzantine golden dome. Destroyed in WWII, the GDR blew up the ruin in 1958, but it was rebuilt and reopened in 1995. The start point of the Jewish Berlin walking tour and an anchor of the neighbourhood's Jewish heritage.
