This 3,500-year-old Egyptian obelisk from the Temple of Karnak is one of the oldest objects in Istanbul — and it's just standing in a park. Theodosius I brought it from Luxor around 390 AD and erected it on the central spine of the Hippodrome. The carved marble base shows the emperor in his box at the chariot races, a snapshot of Byzantine daily life frozen in stone.
