Six slender minarets pierce the sky above Sultanahmet — the only imperial mosque in Istanbul with that many. Step inside and the reason for the nickname becomes clear: over 20,000 handmade İznik tiles in fifty different tulip designs wash the interior in waves of blue. Visit in the late afternoon when shafts of light pour through 260 stained-glass windows and the tiles seem to glow from within.
