A shogun's seaside villa where centuries-old pines are framed against modern skyscrapers rising behind them.

This former shogunal seaside villa is one of Tokyo's finest landscape gardens, a place where centuries-old black pines frame views of glass skyscrapers rising beyond the seawall. The centerpiece is a large duck pond with a charming teahouse on an island where you can sip bitter matcha while watching carp trace lazy circles below. Some of the trees here are hundreds of years old, their gnarled trunks sculpted by patient hands over generations. The contrast between the meticulously clipped greenery and the bristling skyline of Shiodome behind it creates one of Tokyo's most photographed juxtapositions.
