Perched on the hill above the Daibutsu Hall, this subtemple of Todaiji offers something the Great Buddha can't: sweeping views across the entire town of Nara from its wooden verandah. Originally built around 750, the current structure dates from 1669 and is a National Treasure. The climb up the lantern-lined stone staircase is atmospheric, and once you reach the top, you'll find one of those rare Nara moments of genuine solitude. It's free, far less crowded than the main hall below, and the sunset views are spectacular.
