This world-class museum of Buddhist art houses one of the finest collections of butsuzo (Buddha statues) you'll see anywhere, with about 100 on display at any time — half of them national treasures. The recently renovated 1894 building pairs beautifully with spot-lit galleries where each statue has detailed English explanations. The booklet 'Viewing Buddhist Sculptures' is worth the extra donation for the depth it adds. You'll leave understanding not just what the statues look like, but what they meant to the people who created and worshipped them across a millennium.
