Toledo's old city is a maze of narrow streets where three medieval cultures — Christian, Islamic and Jewish — left monuments within walking distance of each other. The city was one of the most cosmopolitan in medieval Spain, as shown by its magnificent cathedral (containing El Greco masterpieces), the surviving Moorish mosque Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz, the Sinagoga de Santa María La Blanca, and the Jewish neighbourhood remains. Every alley holds another layer of history.
