Thirty-five monasteries were built on these hills to save Serbian culture from the Ottomans — fifteen still stand.

A string of 15 Serbian Orthodox monasteries (of the original 35 built between the 15th and 18th centuries) tucked into the rolling wooded hills of Fruška Gora, constructed to protect Serbian culture and religion from Ottoman expansion. Krušedol Monastery features vivid original frescoes showing clear Byzantine influence, while Novo Hopovo — one of the oldest at 1576 — shows the influence of Cretan masters who worked at Mt Athos. The gentle hills and vineyards surrounding the monasteries make for beautiful driving or cycling routes.
