Considered the country’s most controversial landmark, this regal shrine was the creation of Emperor Meiji who, in an arguably egotistical move, built the structure as a homage to the millions who lost their lives defending him during the tumultuous Meiji era. It’s a sobering place to visit at any time, though the spring sees a renewed spirit with the welcoming of the cherry blossom season. If you choose to brave it in the spring, expect crowds drinking, dancing, and eating among beautiful blossoms.
