Dripping in gold leaf and ornate carvings, this shrine honoring Tokugawa Ieyasu, the warlord who unified Japan, is one of the few Edo-era structures in Tokyo to survive earthquakes, fires, and WWII intact. The approach path is lined with dozens of stone and bronze lanterns donated by feudal lords, each one weathered by centuries of rain. You can appreciate the gilded gate from outside for free, but stepping through rewards you with a closer look at details that verge on the obsessive.
