This pedestrian shopping street is pure mid-20th-century Tokyo, a time capsule lined with butcher shops, vegetable vendors, and family-run stores that somehow survived the supermarket revolution. Tokyoites from across the city come here for the nostalgic atmosphere, the cat-shaped taiyaki, and the golden light that pours down the famous Yuyake Dandan staircase at sunset. Yanaka is one of the rare Tokyo neighborhoods that survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and WWII firebombing, and its traditional wooden buildings and winding temple lanes feel like a different era entirely.
