Since 1998, over half a dozen traditional Naoshima buildings have been turned over to contemporary artists, creating some of the most site-specific art experiences in the world. Highlights include Ōhtake Shinrō's Haisha, where a Statue of Liberty sculpture rises through the levels of a ramshackle house, and James Turrell's Minami-dera, where you enter in total darkness and wait for perception itself to shift. Sugimoto Hiroshi's glass staircase descending into a narrow underground chamber at Go'o Shrine is equally unforgettable.
