A pair of tranquil mountain valleys 30 minutes north of Kyoto, long favoured as escapes from the city's heat and crowds. Kurama is home to a mountain temple and onsen hot spring; Kibune is an impossibly charming hamlet of ryokan overlooking a rushing mountain river. In summer, restaurants set platforms over the water for riverside dining. The classic route crosses the ridge between the two valleys on foot.
