Built by a widow to honor Japan's great unifier Toyotomi Hideyoshi, with gardens by the country's most celebrated landscape architect.
Founded in 1605 by a widow in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Japan's great unifier, this exquisite temple marries grief with beauty in a way that feels deeply Japanese. The gardens were designed by famed landscape architect Kobori Enshu, and the teahouses by Sen no Rikyu, the legendary tea master. Three times a year the grounds are illuminated at night with multicolored spotlights, transforming the moss and bamboo into something that hovers between real and dream. The combination of historical weight and sensory beauty makes it one of Higashiyama's most emotionally resonant temples.
