The whole city could hide underground when the bombers came — and now tourists use the same tunnels to cool down in summer.

An underground system of tunnels built before and during WWI to shelter Pula's civilian population and store ammunition, whose three entrance points all converge in the middle where a photo exhibition documents early aviation in Pula. Walking through the dim passages with their damp smell and curved ceilings creates an immediate sense of wartime claustrophobia. The tunnels are a cool 15°C in summer, making them a popular refuge from the Istrian heat.
