Bulgaria's oldest surviving monastery hides on the mountain above Sofia — a 14th-century chapel where the national resistance leader once hid from Ottoman soldiers.

Probably the oldest extant monastery in Bulgaria, built around 1345 on a forested slope of Mount Vitosha just above Sofia, accessible via a short forest trail from the Dragalevtsi chairlift. The monastery was abandoned only 40 years after its founding, then revived, and is revered as one of the many hiding places of anti-Turkish rebel leader Vasil Levski. Its colourful murals have been preserved inside a small walled compound of great tranquility.
