Completed in 1863, this magnificent domed church is one of Sofia's major landmarks, noted for its rich Byzantine-style murals. Infamously, it was blown up by communists on 16 April 1925 in an attempt to assassinate Tsar Boris III, killing over 120 people — but the Tsar escaped unharmed. The cathedral was rebuilt and today stands as both a spiritual centre and a monument to political violence.
