Two bullets fired from a sandwich-shop doorstep on this bridge started World War I — the most consequential lunch break in history.

The Ottoman stone bridge on the Miljacka River where Gavrilo Princip stepped forward on 28 June 1914 to fire the shots that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, triggering the chain of events that became WWI. The surrounding streets still follow the same Ottoman layout through which the Archduke's motorcade passed. A small museum on the north side marks the spot where world history pivoted.
