Walk a complete circuit of Roman walls in the middle of a city — York has been walled for 2,000 years and refuses to stop.

The best-preserved medieval city walls in England, forming a 4.5-kilometre circuit around the historic centre that can be walked completely in 1.5 to 2 hours. Built originally by the Romans and substantially rebuilt by the medieval Normans, the walls pass through four gatehouses (bars) including the ornate Micklegate Bar and Bootham Bar with views of the Minster. The short stretch from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar gives the best views of York Minster's towers.
