Mehmet the Conqueror built the original mosque on this hilltop in 1470 — the first great imperial mosque of Ottoman Istanbul. Destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt in 1771, it remains the spiritual heart of the conservative Fatih district. The surrounding streets buzz with a distinct energy: traditional markets, Syrian restaurants, and a community that lives at a different rhythm from tourist Istanbul.
