Atatürk died here in 1938 — every clock stopped at 9:05. Pamuk walked past these walls as a child, measuring time in footsteps to Taksim.
When the sultans decided Topkapı was too old-fashioned, they built this — a 285-room Bosphorus-front palace so opulent it bankrupted the empire. The grand Ceremonial Hall holds a 4.5-tonne Bohemian crystal chandelier, the world's largest, and the floors are covered in carpets that took entire villages years to weave. Atatürk died here in 1938; every clock in the palace is stopped at 9:05, the moment of his passing.
