Where the great Theodosian land walls meet the Sea of Marmara, this massive fortress has guarded Istanbul's southern approach since the 4th century. The Roman triumphal arch at its core — the Golden Gate — once welcomed victorious emperors; the Ottomans later used it as a treasury and a terrifyingly effective prison.
