Catalonia's 'sacred mountain' — a 1236m-high mass of bulbous rock pillars — shelters the Benedictine Monestir de Montserrat, home to the 12th-century Black Virgin (La Moreneta), Catalonia's patron saint. The monastery is also home to one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs (from 1223), who perform daily. The mountain walks and views from the summit are extraordinary.
