The royal crypt beneath this church has ceiling frescoes so perfectly preserved that art historians call it the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art — and almost nobody knows about it.

Even older than León's famous cathedral, the Real Basílica de San Isidoro provides a stunning Romanesque counterpoint to the Gothic cathedral's strains. Founded by Fernando I and Doña Sancha in 1063 to house the remains of Saint Isidore as well as 21 early Leónese and Castilian monarchs, the Panteón Real beneath the basilica has ceiling frescoes of such extraordinary quality that they've been called the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque world.
