Only 54 people live in this hilltop village — and Doctor Zhivago was filmed here because it already looked like a movie set.
One of Castilla y León's most romantic tiny hilltop villages, Calatañazor (population 54) has a crumbling medieval air with crooked cobbled lanes wandering through narrow streets lined by ochre stone-and-adobe houses topped with red-tiled roofs and conical chimneys. The village takes its name from the Arabic Qala'at an-Nassur — 'The Vulture's Citadel'. Scenes from Doctor Zhivago were filmed here.
