The building that single-handedly transformed a dying industrial city — Frank Gehry's titanium masterpiece
The shimmering Museo Guggenheim Bilbao is one of modern architecture's iconic buildings. Opened in 1997, Frank Gehry's swooping titanium-clad masterpiece almost single-handedly lifted Bilbao out of its post-industrial depression. The cathedral-like atrium is more than 45m high, with light pouring in through the glass cliffs. Outside, Jeff Koons' giant flower-covered Puppy and Louise Bourgeois' giant spider Maman are artworks in their own right.
