A magnificently reconstructed hilltop castle looming above the old town and river of Trenčín, with origins documented in 1069 but rebuilt extensively in the 15th century. A Roman inscription carved into the cliff below the castle records the 2nd Legion's victory over Germanic tribes in the 2nd century AD, making this one of the most northerly Roman inscriptions in Central Europe. The castle dramatically anchors a university town whose pedestrian centre has a lively café culture.
