The fortress that held off Turks, Hungarians, and Poles for 300 years — now restored to its medieval glory on a hilltop above Moldavian meadows.
Moldavia's finest medieval fortress, built by Prince Petru I Mușat in 1359 on an impregnable high location with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The citadel withstood attacks from Hungarians in 1395 and Turks in 1476 before finally falling to Polish forces in 1691. Recent restoration has returned much of the citadel's magnificence while keeping its raw stone character.
