A tiny island at the northern end of Snagov Lake holds a small stone church dating from the 15th century, accessible only by rowboat or motorboat. The monastery is the reputed burial place of Vlad the Impaler himself, with a tombstone in the floor of the nave. A 17th-century 146-metre-deep well was dug by Turkish prisoners promised freedom on completion — a promise that took 17 years to fulfil.
