Ștefan the Great shot an arrow to choose where to build his monastery — it's buried with him here, Romania's most sacred site.

Built 1466–1481 by Ștefan cel Mare following his victory over the Turks at Chilia, Putna Monastery holds the tomb of Moldavia's greatest ruler and is considered the most sacred site in Romanian Orthodoxy. A large white cross marks the spot where Ștefan stood when he shot an arrow to choose the monastery's location. Eastern Europe's largest collection of Byzantine artifacts is held in the Putna Museum behind the monastery.
