A king built a mosque for his Muslim subjects in 1910 — climb its minaret and look out over the Black Sea from where the Ottomans once ruled.

The seat of the mufti for Romania's 50,000 Muslims, this impressive Ottoman-style mosque was built in 1910 by King Carol I. Inside it houses an enormous Persian rug said to be the largest carpet in the country, and visitors can climb the 140 steps of the minaret for panoramic views over the Black Sea. The mosque serves as a reminder of the region's significant Muslim heritage along the ancient Pontic coast.
