The war that consumed Europe started on the waterfront of this one city — and the amber on these streets washed up from Baltic seabeds.

A spectacular waterfront of Gothic and Dutch Renaissance merchant facades along Długie Pobrzeże, anchored by the 15th-century Gdańsk Crane — the largest medieval harbour crane in Europe — and the picturesque St Mary's Street (ul Mariacka) lined with 17th-century burgher houses with elaborate perrons and amber shops. The enormous St Mary's Church at the street's end, with its 14th-century astronomical clock, claims to be the largest brick church in the world. Gdańsk was the birthplace of Solidarity and the city where WWII began.
