Built on 13,659 wooden piles — Napoleon's brother loved it so much he stole it from the city
Napoleon's brother made this his palace in 1808, but it started life in 1655 as Amsterdam's city hall — built on 13,659 wooden piles. The Citizens' Hall floor has inlaid maps of the eastern and western hemispheres. One of very few palaces where you can watch the King's reception rooms being used for state dinners.
