This Japanese icon needs no introduction. While you can spot its cone floating in the distance from Tokyo on clear days, nothing beats seeing it close up. Those with a head for heights climb to the summit, but most of the locals who day-trip out here stay firmly on the ground, exploring the Fuji Five Lakes instead. Head to the small lake towns surrounding the base of the mountain for some epic vantage points (Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Ashi, to be precise). Visit Fuji Q Highland theme park on your way to Mount Fuji and enjoy the famous roller coasters.
