A living, breathing, glittering time capsule, New Sazae overflows with retro ambience. Tokyo’s oldest gay bar still in existence, it opened its doors in 1966 and has been providing a soundtrack of disco for Tokyo’s LGBTQ+ community ever since. A local favorite in the city’s gay quarter, this intimate and inclusive bar may not be particularly slick or fancy, but it’s a piece of queer Tokyo history (there are fading photos of some of the bar’s early patrons on the walls) and an excellent place to lose a Saturday night.
