Bunraku, Japan's traditional puppet theatre, was born in Osaka's merchant quarters and is now a Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage. Almost-life-sized puppets manipulated by black-clad, visible puppeteers enact dramatic tales of love, duty, and betrayal. Playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon wrote about merchants and pleasure quarters, social classes otherwise ignored in Japanese arts, giving bunraku a democratic soul that feels distinctly Osakan. Single-act tickets make it accessible even for short visits.
