A local would say...
An Edo-period post town on the old Nakasendō highway, the starting point for one of Japan's most beloved day hikes.
Pretty Magome is the furthest south of the Kiso Valley's old Nakasendō post villages, its buildings lining a steep cobblestone pedestrian road with rustic shopfronts and mountain views at every turn. This is where you'll begin (or end) the famous hike to Tsumago, and the village itself is worth lingering in. The smell of grilling rice crackers drifts from doorways, and the gradient of the street gives you the satisfying feeling of climbing into history.
