This beautifully restored former rest stop for the retainers of daimyō lords is one of Tsumago's most impressive structures. Inside, the adjacent Local History Museum tells the story of the Kiso Valley and the Nakasendō highway through elegant exhibitions, some with English signage. The dark timber interiors smell of cedar and polish, and you can feel the weight of the feudal road system that once connected Edo to Kyoto.
