Thousands of vermilion torii gates march up a thickly wooded mountain in seemingly endless arcades, creating tunnels of orange light that rank among the most photographed sights in all of Japan. Dedicated to the gods of rice and sake in the 8th century, this sprawling shrine complex is the head of 40,000 Inari shrines nationwide. The 4km pathway winds past hundreds of stone foxes, atmospheric sub-shrines, and miniature graveyards that take on an eerie beauty in the late afternoon. Get lost — intentionally — and the deeper you go, the fewer people you'll meet.
