A Japanese proverb: 'He who climbs Mt Fuji once is a wise man, he who climbs it twice is a fool.'

At 3,776 metres, Japan's most iconic peak needs no introduction. Climbing Fuji and watching the sunrise from the summit is one of Japan's superlative experiences, a gruelling but deeply rewarding overnight ascent through volcanic rubble, with the sky lightening to gold and pink as you reach the crater's edge. Even from below, catching a glimpse of the perfect snow-capped cone against a clear blue sky will stop you in your tracks. The Japanese proverb says it well: he who climbs Fuji once is wise, he who climbs it twice is a fool.
