Climb up through cypress groves to the terrace where every Florence postcard photo is taken — at sunset the city turns gold and the dome turns orange and the moment is impossible to photograph well enough.

A vast panoramic square on the south bank of the Arno, Piazzale Michelangelo offers the most celebrated view of Florence — the red-tiled dome of the Duomo, the tower of Palazzo Vecchio, and the hills beyond Fiesole all laid out in a single sweeping panorama. The square is anchored by one of the city's two bronze copies of Michelangelo's David. The walk up from the Oltrarno through olive groves and cypress alleys is itself a pleasure.
