Perched on a dramatic ridge in the Alborz Mountains 110km northeast of Qazvin, Alamut was the mountain headquarters of Hasan-i Sabbah, founder of the Nizari Ismaili sect and the legendary 'Old Man of the Mountain'. Though mostly rubble, the stunning views, mountain villages and hiking trails make the journey worthwhile.
