An extraordinary mud-brick citadel dating back at least to the Sassanian period (7th century BC), Arg-e Bam was once one of the world's finest examples of earthen architecture with 38 towers, massive walls and a fairy-tale inner fortress. Severely damaged by the 2003 earthquake, the ruins are still awe-inspiring and actively being reconstructed.
