Monks have lived and prayed on this hill for over 1,000 years without interruption — even the Communists couldn't stop them.
A still-operating Benedictine monastery founded in 996 AD on a commanding hilltop, one of Hungary's most important historic monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage site, housing a remarkable library and crypt alongside active monastic life. The complex mixes Romanesque, Gothic, baroque, and neoclassical elements accumulated over ten centuries of continuous use. The monks produce wine and herbal liqueurs sold to visitors.
