The ancient castle at the heart of Eger, the baroque wine-country city famous for Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood wine), where Hungarian defenders became legendary in 1552 by repelling an Ottoman army vastly larger than their own. The castle overlooks a perfectly preserved baroque city centre of Copf-style architecture found almost nowhere else. A short walk southwest through the town leads to the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where dozens of wine cellars are carved into volcanic tuff hillsides.
