46 stone villages in the mountains that the Ottomans couldn't conquer — they preserved a Greece that no longer exists anywhere else.
A series of 46 remote stone villages in the Pindos Mountains of Epiros — unlike anything else in Greece. The villages are linked by ancient cobblestone paths and arched stone bridges over spectacular gorges, of which the 12km Vikos Gorge is the deepest in the world relative to its width. The Turkish occupation never fully reached these highlands, allowing a distinct culture, architecture and way of life to survive intact.
