One of the world's few petrified forests outside the USA, located on the arid western plains of Lesvos. Twenty-million-year-old trees transformed to stone by volcanic ash now protrude from the landscape as fossil trunks. A UNESCO Global Geopark protects the site and a museum nearby explains the ancient volcanic activity that created it.
